Dragon and Dungeon Online Magazines to Get Content Makeover

Wizards has announced that at some unspecified time in the future they will be changing up the content with their two online magazines a bit.

"But now, we have a year of 4th Edition under our belts, and we've taken a good, hard look at the magazines and the content we release. In a few months (we're not ready to talk about specific dates yet), we're going to refocus the content of Dragon and Dungeon with the goal of giving players and DMs exciting and useful 4th Edition material in a clear-cut, intuitive way. In the new world order, Dragon will become the hub for all of your player needs, and Dungeon will become the hub for all of your DM needs."

I guess the new split of a player and a DM magazine focus makes sense. Honestly though why have it at all? Now that they are digital, why split them in any way? Its not like there are printing concerns anymore. Why not just have a Dungeons and Dragons magazine? I guess in the end it really doesn't matter since its all digital.

If there was any change to make this was probably the most obvious one. They did make sure that the 4E books were really separated well, and that players would only have to have the Player's Handbook and not need to reference the DM book at all. I guess doing the same for the magazines makes sense.

I forsee split pricing.

Re: Chadarius: why split them in any way?

If you want my guess, this is the first step in a tiered pricing scheme for D&D Insider.

For a base price, you will get Player level access which will give you Dragon, the Character Builder, etc.

For a little more, you will get Dungeon Master level access which gives you everything at "Player" level, plus Dungeon and some of these new Campaign Planner tools they have been talking about.

I imagine Player level pricing will stay the same as it is now, but Dungeon Master level pricing will be a bit more.

Please note, this I have no insider knowledge and this is only a guess.

PS - On a related note, I noticed that they are also changing the way RPGA rewards Player level vs DM level at this time as well.  Coincidence?

Sincerely,

A Hero

Should have Happend - big woop as we used to say as kids

Really a non-issue.  Should have happened a while ago.  I guess they did not do this in the paper magazines since they wanted the cross-over purchases.
