Wizards of the Coast FINALLY Releases PDFs

After years of leaving money on the table for older D&D content and grumbling about all the Torrents of awesome homemade PDFs of their products (I know right!?) Wizards has finally release a ton of back catalog in PDF format.

Not only that, but instead of trying to do something digital on their own and failing, the partnered with a ready made solution and used DriveThruRPG to create the DnD Classics web site.

This new site has a ton of older manuals and adventures. Surprisingly it also holds a few 4E items as well (wow things become classics quickly these days!).

You should go there now and get the four free PDFs immediately. Why? Cause they are free!

Interesting. I'd be all for it if Wizards would be better supported and managed. But it seems like they could get even more lost in the suffle at such a large conglomerate.

Hello D&D World. I'm back! Or at least slowly making my comeback. After several months (I won't count because that is already far too much math) of remodeling, LLL crud, and having our 4th child, I am trying to get back into those things I truly love...my kids and gaming. Let me clarify. I love my new house and I want to make it all homey and I love breastfeeding (who doesn't love boobs). It just that these things have been all consuming in the last 6-9, oh let's be honest year!

So I am taking a moment from those other priorities to tell you about an AWESOME conversation or two that I had with my kindergartener this morning and yes it's about D&D minis.

Getting back to the story: Hands-on with Dungeons & Dragons Next - Charlie Hall writes on Ars Technica:

The most impressive part of WoTC’s presentation, to me, was the admission that they were somewhat behind the times in not offering digital copies of their properties, both past and present. They promised that, in the coming years, they would finally release searchable PDF copies of books from every system, all the way back to the original 1970s classic. Gamers will, as the keynote’s moderator Kevin Kulp politely put it politely, finally be able to play D&D from their tablets like they can with competing properties from Paizo and countless independent RPG makers.

The second major revelation was that the entire back catalogue of Dungeons & Dragons products would eventually be released in a digital format. Twitter fans noticed that they didn't say "PDF" only "electronic format." I confirmed this with the Wizards team afterwards -- they did NOT say PDFs, only a "electronic format" that's still in the works. So we'll see what form it takes. Of course, I've been predicting this outcome since the admitted goal of the new edition was to monetize the old editions, something WOTC can't do without actually selling the older editions.

I'm still sceptical about anything to do with WotC and the word digital. But releasing everything electronically is probably a step in the right direction. I say probably because the wording in the above quote leaves lots of wiggle room for insane corporate lawyer bullshit. 'Nuff said.

Rush Limbaugh Rips off MM Art... Just weird

On the cover of his most recent newsletter, artist Christopher Hiers is credited with the left illustration, which — Rush's severed head and hypno-Obama eyes notwithstanding — looks exactly like artist Wayne Reynolds' drawing of the "Nightmare Beast" from the 2002 Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition Monster Manual II.

I am so weirded out by this. Rush and D&D is the last thing I would put together in my mind. Perhaps Wizards should pay Rush a favor back and make him an evil NPC in a DNDNext adventure? He should be some kind of leacherous, bloated, windbag of a high priest with lots of brain dead gullable minions.

Again, I cannot stress enough that I do not want to offend or disrespect the developers and designers at Wizards of the Coast – they do some amazing work on D&D products, and the hobby has benefitted from their efforts over the past several years. But although I am truly a lifelong fan of D&D, I cannot profess to being a fan of Hasbro/WotC enough to want to buy D&D Next just because it has a Dungeons & Dragons logo on it. I feel quite strongly that the best way to perpetuate Dungeons & Dragons into the future is to support all of the fan base, current and past, and to assure that they are not disenfranchised by removing corporate support and retiring their favorite editions.
