Dungeons & Desktops - a book review
Submitted by Chadarius on Thu, 03/04/2010 - 11:55I came across this review, by Michael Tresca of the Chicago Examiner. It is of a book called "Dungeons & Desktops"
In research for my upcoming book, Paper & Pixels, I came across a series of articles on Gamasutra about the history of computer role-playing games (CRPGs). It was the most exhaustive approach on the Internet that I'd ever seen and was valuable in framing my chapter on CRPGs. When I came across Dungeons & Desktops, I noticed some similarities and sure enough, Matt Barton wrote both.

Sound Mixer for RPG Games
Submitted by Chadarius on Sun, 01/24/2010 - 13:34The Lords of Tyr have often used music, sounds, and sound effects to great advantage during our games. We don't use it everytime we game. But perhaps that is because we just don't have the right tools. I have 1000's of sounds effects from different games and downloads but I've never really organized them for use during a game as much as I would like.
Now there is a tool that would help with this called Scene Sound. Now, when I create the set of tokens for monsters and NPC's for an encounter, I can also create a set of sounds and background noises! Talk about immersive! I haven't tried this program out, but I plan to mess around with it in the next week or so. Has anyone else tried it? What did you think? Leave us some comments!

How to Connect to uStream Chat with IRC
Submitted by Chadarius on Sun, 12/06/2009 - 16:12The last few shows, our listeners have been having issues with the embedded chat from uStream. If that is happening to you, you can often get around the problem by switching to an IRC client and chatting with the Lords, Ladies, and listeners of Tyr!
Our show channel for the Live Podcast is #lords-of-tyr-dungeons-and-dragons-live-podcast.
Our show channel for Game Nights is #lords-of-tyr-dungeons-and-dragons.
There is a great article over at PCMech.com that has lots of great information about the different clients and exactly how to connect.
In general here is what you need to do using an IRC client.
You do have a uStream user ID already right? If not, head over to http://ustream.tv and get a user ID.
You will connect to one of these four servers:
chat01.ustream.tv
chat02.ustream.tv
chat03.ustream.tv
chat04.ustream.tv

This is a tough one. Considering that our podcasts are the most popular item at http://lordsoftyr.com, I'd have to say that your opinion is a bit out numbered [by consumers of our content].

RPG Bloggers Network Going Through Some Changes
Submitted by Chadarius on Sat, 10/31/2009 - 10:58The RPG Bloggers Network has been going through some growing pains lately.
In addition some leadership changes have occurred – Phil has stepped down from the board and as Community Manager, Dave will be stepping down as leader of the board to a more secondary role as the Network moves forward, Graham will be stepping down as Technical Director, and Danny may still be involved in minor ways with the Network but not to the same extent.
We are searching for new leaders for the Network from amongst our membership and we welcome you to speak up if this is something you’d be interested in helping out with. While we would like to be involved in the process of who will take over the Network, we can also sit aside from that process if it is the will of the collective Network membership.

Digital Dungeons and Dragons Table Top
Submitted by Chadarius on Tue, 10/20/2009 - 13:27This is a bit of a different take on a digital table top. I think I'm going to write these Carnegie-Mellon guys and see if they would think about working with an existing open source app like the RPTools.net guys provide.

D&D Online's Free Strategy is Working. Should Wizards of the Coast be Paying Attention?
Submitted by Chadarius on Tue, 10/13/2009 - 15:18Dungeons and Dragons Online made the Ars Technica front page today. It turns out that providing free access and gaming with the option to pay for items and more content actually works. This is no surprise to me, as I've been advocating this approach for long time in regards to most kinds of content (especially digital media). People will pay for things, but they won't if the price to get interested in a product is too steep. Spending $50 for the client and paying $15 per month is too expensive for all but the upper crust of the MMO gaming world (sadly still World of Warcraft... When is someone going to come up with something new?).
What is working for D&D Online is wiping out all of those barriers to play. No more $50 client. No more $15 per month. You can still pay for a subscription and be able to have more in game credits to spend on "stuff". Or you can just play for free and have to work harder and longer to gain credits in game.
